multitasking.
Solaris - An Unix -based operating environment developed by Sun Microsystems. Originally developed to run on Sun's SPARC workstations, Solaris now runs on many workstations from other vendors.
IRIX - An operating based on Unix created by Silicon Graphics Inc.
BSD/OS - A popular and free version of UNIX that runs on Intel microprocessors. BSD is distributed in executable and source code form. The source code enables ambitious users to actually extend the operating system.
MAC OS - The Macintosh operating system.
Unix - Pronounced yoo-niks, a popular multi-user, multitasking operating system developed at Bell Labs in the early 1970s. Due to its portability, flexibility, and power, UNIX has become the leading operating system for workstations.
Linux - Pronounced lee-nucks. A freely-distributable open source implementation of UNIX that runs on a number of hardware platforms, including Intel and Motorola microprocessors. It was developed mainly by Linus Torvalds. Because it's free, and because it runs on many platforms, including PCs, Macintoshes and Amigas, Linux has become extremely popular over the last couple years.
